OpenAI is seeking a Software Engineer (Systems) to lead the development of scalable, reliable distributed systems that power our cutting-edge AI technology. As part of our team, you'll play a crucial role in bringing OpenAI's innovations to the world through products like ChatGPT and the OpenAI API. We prioritize responsible and safe AI deployment over unfettered growth.
In this role, you'll design and build high-performance infrastructure systems, analyze and solve scalability challenges, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to bring new features and research capabilities to life. Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement scalable, reliable distributed systems
- Analyze and improve system performance and efficiency
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex system issues
- Partner with researchers, engineers, and other stakeholders
- Set technical strategy for high-scale infrastructure systems
- Participate in on-call rotation for critical incident response
Requirements:
- 4+ years of relevant industry experience, with 2+ years leading complex projects or teams
- Expertise in building and managing large-scale distributed systems
- Experience with data systems, storage, caching, search, or related areas
- Strong focus on system reliability, scalability, and performance
- Proficiency in systems programming, multi-threading, and concurrency
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build consensus
- Adaptability to work in ambiguous and rapidly changing environments
- Humble attitude and eagerness to collaborate
Preferred: Fluency in C++ and experience in databases, large data systems, or information retrieval
